Certified Sex Therapist

To be a sex therapist, you must be comfortable talking about all facets of human sexuality, including sexualization, sensuality, intimacy, identity, sexual health and reproduction, eroticism, emotions, and sexual orientation.

But, similar to being a doctor, there is more to it than a general comfort level in discussing issues. There is knowledge. There is experience. There is guided supervision and invaluable consultation. And above all, there is a passion to the field and a focus on helping clients with delicate and sensitive topics and issues.

The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) is the most recognized organization in America to certify Sex Therapists. Becoming an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist is a very rigorous process and includes additional education and specific training in various areas pertaining to sexuality and sexual health. This includes over 500 hours of specific clinical supervision, training in attitudes and values, clinical experience, field work, and many other requirements… in other words, an intense dedication to the study and field of sexuality.

So, while being comfortable talking about sex is a great starting point, it is just that: a starting point.

When seeking Sex Therapy, ask your potential therapist what additional training they have had in the field of sexuality.  You owe that to yourself.
